001.9 -- The Lure of the Unknown

Of all the numbers in the Dewey Decimal System, none seems to have a closer affinity with the unknown than.... 001.9. Oh, I know, the 530s of physics try to explain the Big Bang, the 793s delve into magic, and the 305s try to explain the mysteries of the opposite sex, but 001.9 -- come on! What could be more exciting? Bigfoot, Yeti, Nessie, aliens -- these are the things that inspire us, that beg to be answered, and yet at the same time defy our solutions. If you find yourself pondering these timeless questions, come to the library to lose yourself in the 001.9 section. To find the books in the CHMS catalog in the 001.9 section, click on any 001.9 in this blog, then type in 001.9 as a call number.

Over the weekend, we picked up still MORE great new books for the library.

  • The latest Alex Rider saga by Anthony Horowitz, Ark Angel
  • Test your knowledge of classic books and poke fun at them at the same time with Chris Riddell's The Da Vinci Cod. Riddell parodies books that might have been with great illustrations.
  • William Steig's classic follow-up to CDB, CDC? Red Sox fans may commiserate with this one: R T-M S B-N B-10. But don't get me started...

If you want to see some of the best children's literature around, be sure to check out the Dorothy Canfield Fisher Book Award homepage. For 50 years now, the children of Vermont have chosen their favorite books of the year. Each year, thirty new books make up the list, and Vermont kids vote for their choice. Right now, the DCF Committee is reading books published in 2006 to decide on the new master list for 2007.

Want to help? Adults can always apply to be on the committee (click here for more information), and kids can recommend their favorite titles (click here to do just that!).

The CHMS Library has all the books on this year's list. If you're a student in grades 4 through 8, the voting for your favorites will happen in April of 2007. Time to get reading!
Just in: Peter Miller's been photographing Vermont and Vermonters for more than 50 years. The library is now proud to own his trio of books focusing on our state: Vermont People, Vermont Gathering Places, and Vermont Farm Women.
